Lost your Wordle streak for no reason? Here is what actually happened

A streak that vanishes after a flight, a browser clean-up or a new phone is not bad luck. It is three specific, fixable causes.

A streak vanishing feels arbitrary, and it almost never is. There are three causes of a lost Wordle streak, they are all mechanical, and knowing which one hit you decides whether it can be recovered.

Cause one: you crossed a time zone

This is the most common and the most infuriating. If the puzzle rolls over at midnight in one fixed place rather than where you are, then flying somewhere can hand you two puzzles in a day or skip one entirely. You did nothing wrong and the counter reset anyway.

How we handle it: you set your own time zone and the day rolls over at midnight in that zone. Travelling changes nothing, because the thing that defines your day travels with you.

Cause two: your browser forgot

Guest progress lives in your browser's storage. Clear your history with the wrong box ticked, run a cleanup tool, hit the storage limit in private browsing, or let an aggressive privacy setting expire it — and it is gone with no warning and nothing to restore from.

How we handle it: guest play is complete and needs no account, but a streak worth keeping belongs on an account rather than in a browser. Making one claims everything you have already played on that device, streak included, so there is nothing to lose by leaving it late.

Cause three: you changed device

A streak in browser storage is a streak on one browser. A new phone, a work laptop, a different browser on the same machine — each is a fresh start, and playing on two devices in one day can register as neither.

How we handle it: an account syncs the streak across everything you play on. Sign in on the new device and the streak is already there.

How to get your Wordle streak back

It depends which of the three it was.

  • Time zone or a genuine sync problem: yes. The streak is derived from your actual play history rather than stored as a number, so if the history says you played, it can be rebuilt. You can repair it yourself rather than writing to somebody.
  • Browser storage cleared with no account: the history is genuinely gone. Nothing can reconstruct plays that were only ever recorded in one place that no longer exists.
  • You missed a day: no, and it should not be. A streak that survives missing a day is not measuring anything.

Stopping it happening again

  1. Set your time zone, so the day rolls over where you are.
  2. Make an account before you have a streak worth mourning. It claims what you have already played, so making one early costs nothing.
  3. Do not rely on browser storage for anything you would be annoyed to lose.

And if the worst happens, the archive has every past puzzle, free. A streak is a number; the puzzles are the part you actually came for.
