What makes a daily different from just playing

   One word, and everybody gets the same one

   That is the whole trick. A puzzle you can play a hundred times is a pastime; a puzzle everybody in your group is doing today is a conversation. It is why people share a grid of coloured squares rather than a score.

   It rolls over at midnight where YOU are

   Set your time zone once. The day changes at your midnight rather than somebody else's, which is why flying somewhere never hands you two puzzles or skips one — the commonest reason a streak dies for no apparent reason.

   A missed day is a missed day, and that is the point

   A streak that survives skipping is not measuring anything. But a streak lost to a cleared browser or a new phone is not a missed day, and that one you can repair yourself.

   Missing one does not put it out of reach
