How to Play It on Paper

   It Takes Two People

   There is no computer on a sheet of paper, so somebody has to be the computer. One player picks a word and keeps it hidden; the other guesses. That is how every classroom version of this works, and it is closer to hangman than to the app.

   Mark the Boxes With Circles, Not Colours

   A filled circle is the right letter in the right place, a half circle is the right letter in the wrong place, and an empty circle means the letter is not in the word. The key is printed on the sheet. Everyone else's printable needs three coloured markers; this one needs the pencil you already have, and it still works after a photocopier has turned everything grey.

   Three to Six Letters

   Pick the width at the top and every board on the sheet changes with it. Three letters for a child still sounding words out, six for a spelling list or somebody who wants a fight.

   Bring Your Own Words, or Use Ours

   Set the word list to None and the sheet is four blank boards — the words are whatever you choose, which is what makes it useful on a Friday with this week's spellings. Pick a reading level instead and the last page carries twelve words of the right length for the holder to choose from, because thinking of a word is otherwise the whole difficulty for a seven-year-old.

   Four Boards to a Sheet

   One each for four children, or two turns each for a pair. There is an alphabet under every board to cross letters off as they come back empty — the paper version of the keyboard greying out. A single board on an A4 page is a waste of a photocopy.
