How the Word Searches Work

  1. Three Reading Levels

    A ten by ten grid with eight words for five to seven, twelve by twelve with twelve words for eight to ten, and fourteen by fourteen with fourteen words for eleven and up. The grid grows with the reader rather than the same puzzle in a bigger box.

  2. The Directions Grow Too

    The youngest sheets run forwards only, across and down. The middle band adds diagonals. The oldest run in all eight directions including backwards. A five-year-old reading backwards diagonally is doing a visual search that happens to contain letters, not spelling practice.

  3. Only Words the Grid Actually Holds

    The list under the grid names the words that were really placed, never the ones we asked for. A word search that lists a word the generator could not fit is a puzzle with no solution, and the child is the one who finds out.

  4. Twelve Sheets in Each Band

    Thirty-six distinct sheets, none of them a reshuffle of another. Each has its own address, so the same link gives the same grid next term.

Is there a free printable word search for adults?

The eleven-and-up sheets are a fourteen by fourteen grid with fourteen words running in all eight directions, which is a proper adult word search. The reading level sets the vocabulary, not the difficulty of the search.

Can I get a word search PDF?

Print to PDF from your browser and you have one. There is no separate download, because a download is a copy that drifts out of date the moment a sheet changes.

Is there an answer key?

Not on these sheets. The words are listed under the grid, so the check is finding them rather than marking them — and a word search worksheet with the solution on the back tends to get turned over.

What age are they for?

Five and up. Pick the band by how confidently your child reads rather than by their birthday: a strong seven-year-old is often better served by the middle sheets.
