What Is on the Sheet

A Proper Grid, at Three Sizes
Nine by nine is the default because it is the smallest board whose black squares can sit anywhere but the corners. Seven by seven and five by five are there too — the small one prints two to a sheet, the bigger boards get a page each so the squares stay large enough to write in.

Or Freeform, for the Youngest
The freeform option has no black squares at all: the words interlock into an irregular shape that floats on the page. It is the format almost every infant-school worksheet uses, and because the shape comes from the words rather than a fixed layout, no two are ever alike.

The Word Bank Is a Switch
On, and every answer is listed above the clues in alphabetical order — enough help that a seven-year-old can finish one. Off, and it is a proper crossword. Both versions are the same puzzle, so a class can work at two levels on the same answers.

Real Clues, From a Dictionary
Every clue is a definition of the word it belongs to, taken from the same dictionary the site runs on — not trivia, not a pun, and not a phrase that only makes sense once you already know the answer. The number in brackets is how many letters, which is the other half of the clue.

Printable crossword questions
What age are these for?
About seven and up with the word bank on, and nine and up with it off. The words come from the same pool as the daily mini crossword, which is capped at everyday vocabulary — no obscure answers and nothing a child would have to look up.
Why is nine by nine the default rather than the small one?
Because of where the black squares can go. On a five by five, a black square anywhere in the middle would split a row into two and two, and two-letter answers are not allowed — so every one is forced into a corner and every puzzle ends up looking the same. A nine by nine has room to scatter them, which is what a crossword is supposed to look like.
What sizes are there?
Five by five, seven by seven and nine by nine, plus a freeform option with no black squares. Every one is built from the same everyday-word pool, so a bigger grid means a longer puzzle rather than a harder vocabulary.
Can I get the same puzzle twice?
Yes. Every sheet has its own address, so the same link gives the same two puzzles next term. There are twelve sheets, and the daily mini crossword online has two hundred more.
Do you have a free crossword PDF?
Print to PDF from your browser — that is the same file, and it means the sheet you get is the sheet you looked at rather than a download that might be out of date.
