   A Proper Grid, at Three Sizes

   Nine by nine is the default because it is the smallest board whose black squares can sit anywhere but the corners. Seven by seven and five by five are there too — the small one prints two to a sheet, the bigger boards get a page each so the squares stay large enough to write in.

   Or Freeform, for the Youngest

   The freeform option has no black squares at all: the words interlock into an irregular shape that floats on the page. It is the format almost every infant-school worksheet uses, and because the shape comes from the words rather than a fixed layout, no two are ever alike.

   The Word Bank Is a Switch

   On, and every answer is listed above the clues in alphabetical order — enough help that a seven-year-old can finish one. Off, and it is a proper crossword. Both versions are the same puzzle, so a class can work at two levels on the same answers.

   The Answers Are on Their Own Page

   They print after the puzzles rather than beside them, so you can hand the sheet out and keep the last page back. Print the lot for solving on your own and it is a two-page pack.

   Real Clues, From a Dictionary

   Every clue is a definition of the word it belongs to, taken from the same dictionary the site runs on — not trivia, not a pun, and not a phrase that only makes sense once you already know the answer. The number in brackets is how many letters, which is the other half of the clue.
